Against a backdrop of growing apprehension among Israeli authorities over events in Egypt, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, an Israeli group campaigning for health rights both in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, has issued a ‘Message of solidarity with the struggle of the Egyptian people’.
The message of support, issued in Hebrew and Arabic, lauds the people of Egypt and Tunisia for ‘struggling and shaking off the tyranny, corruption and suppression of liberties under which they have toiled for many years.’
It emphasizes the right of the Egyptian and Tunisian peoples ‘to define and create their own future and fate in their own way, and ‘to demonstrate and to protest until all their social, economic and political rights are fulfilled.’
Israeli officials have reportedly called on the United States and other key states to curb their criticism of Egypt’s beleaguered president, Hosni Mubarak, and preserve ‘stability’.
